Somewhere over the tropics, a fleet of high-flying aircraft releases a fine mist of sulfur particles into the stratosphere. The particles catch the sunlight, scatter a fraction of it back to space, and the planet below cools by a fraction of a degree. No smokestacks are shut, no economies retooled, no lifestyles abandoned. It costs, by some estimates, only a few billion dollars a year — pocket change against the scale of the problem it addresses. This is not science fiction, and it is not a proposal anyone has yet dared to run. It is one of the ideas Oliver Morton takes seriously in his 2015 book The Planet Remade, and the seriousness is the whole point.
Morton is not a booster. He is a science writer who spent years talking to the small, uneasy community of researchers who study what is politely called geoengineering — the deliberate, large-scale manipulation of the climate. What he came away with is neither a sales pitch nor a warning label, but something harder to hold: the conviction that global warming is dangerous enough, and the alternatives difficult enough, that refusing to even examine these tools would be its own kind of recklessness. Weaning the world off fossil fuels is proving slow, uneven, and possibly too late to spare us the worst. So the question of what else we might do stops being fringe and starts being unavoidable.
The discomfort is real, and Morton does not talk us out of it. Reaching for a planetary thermostat sounds like hubris, like the setup to a story that ends badly. But so, he suggests, does doing nothing while the thermometer climbs. Between those two fears lies a conversation most of us have been avoiding.

01Chapter 1 — The problem we can't out-virtue
The starting point of Morton's argument is a set of numbers most of us would rather not sit with. Carbon dioxide, once released, lingers in the atmosphere for centuries. The concentration has climbed past levels the Earth has not seen in millions of years, and it is still rising. Even the most optimistic scenarios for cutting emissions leave a great deal of warming already locked in. The planet's climate system has enormous inertia, like a ship that keeps moving long after the engines cut out. We are steering something that responds slowly and forgives nothing.
Against this, the standard answer is mitigation: burn less, emit less, build a low-carbon economy. Morton does not dismiss this — he thinks it's essential — but he refuses the comforting fiction that it's straightforward. Fossil fuels are woven into nearly everything, not as a bad habit but as the physical basis of modern life: the fertilizer that feeds billions, the concrete and steel of cities, the ships and planes that move the world. Replacing all of it is not a matter of willpower or a carbon tax. It is one of the largest engineering projects humanity has ever attempted, and it is running late.
02Chapter 2 — The system we already run without meaning to
Before proposing that we engineer the climate, Morton makes a disarming point: we already do. Not on purpose, but massively. Every year, human activity moves more nitrogen through the biosphere than all natural processes combined, mostly through the fertilizer that keeps agriculture running. We have altered the carbon cycle, the water cycle, the chemistry of the oceans. The idea of a pristine, untouched planet that geoengineering would violate is, on inspection, a fantasy. The touching has been going on for a century.
This reframing matters, because much of the horror geoengineering provokes rests on the sense that we would be crossing a line from a natural world into an artificial one. Morton argues the line was crossed long ago, distractedly, without anyone deciding. Burning fossil fuels is a planetary intervention — one with warming as its side effect. The difference between that and geoengineering is not that one touches the Earth and the other doesn't. It's that one is accidental and the other would be deliberate. And deliberate, he suggests, is not obviously worse.
03Chapter 3 — What deliberate intervention would actually look like
Geoengineering is not one thing, and Morton is at pains to separate its very different branches. The first family aims at the sunlight — solar radiation management. The stratospheric veil belongs here, and so does a stranger cousin: brightening marine clouds by spraying fine seawater into the air from fleets of unmanned vessels, thickening the low clouds over the oceans so they reflect more light. These methods are cheap and fast-acting. That is precisely what makes them dangerous. Anything a single country, or a wealthy individual, could afford to do to the whole sky is a geopolitical problem as much as a scientific one.
The second family goes after the carbon itself — pulling CO2 back out of the air. This is what most of us instinctively prefer, because it addresses the cause rather than the symptom. Morton examines the biological routes, including fertilizing patches of ocean with iron to trigger blooms of photosynthetic plankton that draw down carbon as they grow and, ideally, sink it to the deep. The appeal is obvious; the record is humbling. Ocean experiments have been ambiguous, the carbon often returns, and the ecological side effects are poorly understood. Carbon removal is slow, expensive, and enormous in the scale it would need to matter.
04Chapter 4 — Choosing the world we live in
Step back from the machinery and the book's larger claim comes into focus. Morton's real subject is not sulfur particles or plankton blooms; it is the end of a certain innocence. For most of human history we could imagine ourselves as inhabitants of a world that was simply given — a nature we lived within, sometimes damaged, but never authored. That world, he argues, is gone. Whether we intervene deliberately or not, the climate of the coming centuries will be a product of human choices. The atmosphere is now something we manage, badly, by default.
Once that sinks in, the moral terrain shifts. The question is no longer whether to keep the planet natural — that ship has sailed — but whether to keep engineering it carelessly, through the accumulated exhaust of our economies, or to start engineering it on purpose, with intention and accountability. Framed that way, refusing even to study geoengineering is not a neutral or humble position. It is a decision to let the accidental intervention run unchecked. Purity of intention, Morton suggests, is not the same as responsibility.
05Conclusion
So the aircraft over the tropics, releasing their fine sulfuric mist, remain hypothetical — and Morton would say that's exactly the state they should be in for now: studied, understood, argued over, not deployed in haste or dismissed in horror. His book asks us to do something genuinely hard, which is to keep a frightening option on the table without either grabbing it or throwing it away. Between the fantasy of a technical fix and the comfort of refusal, there is a narrower, more honest path, and it runs straight through our discomfort.
