How we've imagined memory
Description
Around 400 BC, in a dialogue Plato wrote to needle his teacher Socrates, memory turns up as a block of wax. The soul carries a tablet, Socrates says, and whatever we want to keep we press into it like a signet ring stamping soft wax. Recall works when the impression holds; forgetting is the mark smoothing over. It sounds almost quaint now, and yet reach for how you describe your own memory today and you will land on something not so different — a hard drive, a filing cabinet, a photo album in the head. We never quite stop reaching for the object that will hold the thing.
That reflex — describing memory through whatever storage device the century happens to have built — is the thread Douwe Draaisma follows in Metaphors of Memory. A Dutch historian of psychology, Draaisma noticed that the images we use are not random. They track the technology of their moment. Wax gave way to the book, the book to the photograph, the photograph to the computer and eventually the hologram. Each new machine for keeping information promptly became a new way of imagining the mind that keeps memories, as though the brain were forever borrowing its self-portrait from the workshop next door.
What makes the pattern worth sitting with is that memory itself refuses to be pinned down. Lose it and we lose our grip on who we are, on how to think, even on how to tie a shoe. And yet nobody has ever held a memory, weighed one, or watched one form. So we do the next best thing: we say it is *like* something. The history of those likenesses turns out to be a history of us — of what we could build, and therefore of what we could imagine ourselves to be.

01Chapter 1 — The wax and the seal
The wax tablet is where the Western story starts, and it lasted an astonishingly long time. Plato hands it to Socrates in the Theaetetus: the mind holds a slab of wax, softer in some people, harder in others, and perception presses its shape into it the way a ring seals a letter. Remembering is finding the intact impression; misremembering is fitting a perception to the wrong mark. Aristotle kept the image and refined it, comparing the memory trace to the imprint left by a signet even when the ring itself is gone.
The metaphor was doing real work, not just decorating a lecture. It explained why children and the very old remember poorly — wax too soft to hold a shape, or too hard to take one. It explained why a vivid experience lodges deeper than a dull one, pressed in with more force. It even gave a picture of forgetting as a physical smoothing-over rather than a mysterious loss. For a culture that wrote on wax daily, this was intuition made concrete: everyone knew what a fresh tablet and a worn one looked like.
02Chapter 2 — The book that reads itself back
When the codex — bound pages you could flip and search — spread through the medieval world, memory acquired a new shape. It became a library. St. Augustine, writing his Confessions around AD 397, wanders through the "vast palaces of memory" as through storerooms and vaults, calling up images that present themselves in order. The book brought something the wax never had: an index. You could look things up, cross-reference, keep an inventory. Memory was no longer scattered dents but a collection with a filing system.
This mattered because the medieval world took the art of memory seriously as a discipline. Monks and scholars trained themselves to store enormous quantities of text, and the book metaphor gave them a working model of how. You built rooms in the mind, shelved your knowledge, and walked back through to retrieve it — the method of loci dressed in the imagery of the library. The mind became a place you could organize, and a well-ordered mind was a well-stocked one. Forgetting, in this frame, was misfiling: the item existed, but you had lost its address.
03Chapter 3 — When light learned to remember
In 1839, the daguerreotype went public, and within a generation memory had a dazzling new likeness. Photography seemed to do exactly what recollection promised and always failed at: capture an instant whole, faithful to the smallest detail, immune to the drift of the storyteller. If the eye was a lens and experience a kind of exposure, then a memory was a plate somewhere in the brain, developed and stored, waiting to be printed again. The metaphor was irresistible because it flattered memory's own fantasy of itself — perfect fidelity, the moment preserved.
Draaisma traces how deeply the photographic image sank in. It gave us the idea of the vivid, frozen recollection, and it fed the notion of "flashbulb memories" — those searing images of where we were when something terrible happened, felt to be etched with camera-like accuracy. It also carried the darkroom's whole vocabulary: exposure, development, latent images that surface only later, negatives that can be printed again and again. Freud, reaching for how the unconscious keeps what consciousness has lost, borrowed photographic language too — the latent image waiting to be developed under the right conditions.
04Chapter 4 — The machine that promised to store everything
By the middle of the twentieth century, a machine arrived that seemed to promise the complete picture at last. The computer stored, retrieved, encoded, and processed; it had memory in the literal sense, banks of it, addressable and reliable. Psychology seized the vocabulary almost overnight. We began to speak of encoding and retrieval, of short-term and long-term storage, of buffers and search — the language Draaisma shows to be, once again, borrowed wholesale from the reigning technology. The mind became an information processor, and for the first time the metaphor let researchers write down memory in the crisp terms of engineering.
And then, in a move Draaisma clearly relishes, a stranger image crept in: the hologram. When a hologram is made, information about the whole scene is distributed across the entire plate, so that a fragment can still reconstruct the complete picture, if blurrily. That answered a problem no earlier metaphor could touch — why memory is not neatly filed in one spot but spread out, why damage to a piece of brain rarely erases a single memory cleanly. Karl Pribram built a whole theory of mind on it. The hologram captured distribution and resilience the way the book captured order and the photograph captured detail.
05Conclusion
Plato pressed his ring into a block of wax; we speak of hard drives and latent images and information spread across a plate. The objects changed, but the gesture never did. Faced with something we cannot see, cannot hold, and cannot do without, we point at the cleverest thing we have built and say memory is like that. Draaisma's book is the long, generous account of how that pointing has gone — and of how each metaphor, in solving one puzzle, quietly created the blind spot the next one would have to fix.
