Make your own luck

Strategies beyond academia

Listen to the podcast excerpt:

Description

Creating our own luck involves recognizing and seizing opportunities that seem random but can turn dreams into reality. Success, human values like respect and integrity, personal development, and fulfillment are interconnected, not mutually exclusive.

A fulfilling life or career combines all four by acting on opportunities. "Good luck" is largely self-made by noticing and utilizing the opportunities around us. Missing these chances means missing out on potential benefits. Essentially, luck is just opportunity waiting to be embraced.

Coincidence magic

Unexpected events often play a crucial role in the success or failure of business ventures, highlighting the importance of discerning hidden opportunities in seemingly random occurrences. The ability to recognize and act upon these opportunities, which often present themselves at the most unforeseen times and disguised as challenges, is a key factor for success.

This phenomenon can be attributed to the interconnectedness of human endeavors, which frequently brings together individuals with similar goals from different paths, including significant first encounters such as meeting a spouse, a business partner, or a mentor. The improbability of such meetings lends an almost magical quality to these events, suggesting they are orchestrated by an unseen force.

Values for success

Your personal belief system significantly influences your ability to seize every opportunity that comes your way. In the business world, where transactions hinge on trust, your values are prominently displayed. Those who act in ways that betray trust struggle to succeed in the long term. True accomplishment in business comes from balancing personal growth with goal achievement. Without a strong value system, success often breeds arrogance and insensitivity, whereas a solid set of values fosters respect and gratitude, guiding transactions towards mutual benefit rather than exploitation.

Developing and maintaining a strong value system involves several key strategies. First, acknowledge when you've strayed from your values, confronting the consequences head-on to avoid emotional turmoil. Focus on your own path without obsessing over others' adherence to their values. Embrace the principle of cause-and-effect, understanding that positive actions lead to beneficial outcomes. Integrity is crucial; know what you commit to and why, and be prepared to face challenges head-on. Belief in your actions ensures dedication and success, as finding meaning in work and life fuels the human spirit and opens up opportunities for contribution.

Success needs failure

Failure is often seen as a final setback, yet it is a critical component of success. The key difference between highly successful individuals and others is not the absence of failure; both experience it abundantly. Instead, it lies in their response to challenges. Society's view of failure as a static, permanent state contradicts the reality that many successful people have faced prolonged periods of failure before achieving greatness. For them, failure was a phase to navigate, not an end state.

The true determinant of success is not the presence of failure but the reaction to difficult times. Life's temporary highs and lows are less important than one's mindset and beliefs during these periods. Historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, Pete Sampras, Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank, Herman Meier, and Nathan Pritkin exemplify turning failure into success. Lincoln faced personal and professional setbacks before becoming the 16th American president. Sampras's defeat at the 1992 U.S. Open spurred him to win 13 Grand Slam titles. Marcus and Blank's initial business failure led to the creation of Home Depot, the world's largest hardware store chain. Meier overcame a fall at the 1998 Winter Olympics to win two gold medals, and Pritkin developed a revolutionary treatment for heart disease after being diagnosed with an incurable condition.

Success amidst rejections

In every sales or negotiation scenario, interpreting a "no" as a definitive rejection is a common mistake. More often, it signifies a need for more information before a decision can be made. The path to success is frequently marked by rejections, which should be viewed not as setbacks but as steps towards achieving one's goals. To thrive in business, learning to handle rejection is crucial. It can be seen as a badge of honor, indicating a willingness to risk failure. Without the courage to face potential failure, opportunities become limited. Therefore, embracing rejection, rather than avoiding it, is essential for growth. It strengthens resilience and prepares one for future challenges.

Rejection also serves as a learning opportunity, enhancing the quality of ideas, improving presentation skills, and developing personality traits. No matter how far one advances in their career, rejection remains a constant companion. The key is to keep taking risks and maintain self-belief, learning from each experience. Making sensible adjustments is necessary, but one should not be discouraged by a few rejections, especially when dealing with individuals in roles that require frequent denials.

Faith or retreat

Risk-taking is an essential component of success and personal evolution. To reach the heights you aspire to, it's necessary to gamble something of value, as without risk, the rewards life offers cannot be fully realized. When an opportunity arises that could potentially transform your career, it's crucial to seize it with both hands, embracing the uncertainty that comes with it. However, not all opportunities are created equal, and it's important to distinguish between those that can genuinely advance your career and those that might simply be appealing to a temporarily inflated ego.

To make this distinction, consider seven key questions: What does the opportunity truly offer in terms of real benefits? What could you lose if things don't go as planned, including money, status, credibility, or other resources? Are there other alternatives available? Are you prepared to invest the necessary time, energy, and courage? Do you have the maturity, experience, and wisdom required? Does the opportunity align with your passions, increasing the likelihood of persistence? And finally, what does your intuition tell you about the right course of action?

Specialization power

Becoming an expert in a field where you have talent and passion can lead to significant success. Specializing allows you to develop a reputation for excellence, attracting those seeking top-notch advice or service, and enabling you to command higher fees. The journey to expertise begins with a solid education, continuous learning through workshops, symposiums, and conferences, and staying abreast of industry developments by listening to other experts and taking graduate-level courses.
