How to Make a Great Living Doing What You Love

Listen to the podcast excerpt:
0:00 --:--

Description

The truth is you can turn nearly any passion into ample income. However, it often requires exploring unseen aspects or bringing them to new markets in defiance of norms. When I've made moves, many said “You can’t!” At first I'd argue. Now I say “Just watch!” and do it anyway.

We're not here just to pay bills, prep kids to do the same, and maybe retire. We're here to shine brightly, savor bonds of family and friends, serve our community, and kindle passion in all we do. We're here to feel alive. In doing so, we inspire others that thriving beyond getting by is not only possible, but essential.

Find your passion

Discovering your passion is indeed the first step to becoming a career renegade. It's not about being the best in the world at something, but rather about knowing how to monetize what you love doing. To embark on this journey, you need to ask yourself two key questions: What activities do I love doing? And who do I love being around?

Take some time to reflect on these questions. You'll likely find that certain activities or people ignite your passion. Write these down. Then, ask yourself if you could make a comfortable living from these passions. For now, assume the answer is yes, with enough creativity.

Start by making a list of activities you enjoy. This will serve as your initial guide. Then, refine this list by considering when you reach a state of flow. The concept of flow refers to those moments when you get so absorbed in an activity that you lose track of time. If you love something so much that you become completely engaged in it, that's a clear sign it's a personal passion.

Next, consider the types of people you seek out. As social creatures, we humans enjoy collaborating with like-minded people. Pay attention to who you prefer to spend time with and what they like to do. This can shape your own passions and interests. Identify the people who make you feel most alive. Who would you love to work with on a daily basis?

Choose a career path

To achieve financial independence, align your career with your skills and interests. Starting an online business offers flexibility and the chance to be your own boss. For those with technical skills, developing and selling apps or software can be lucrative. Specialized experts might consider consulting, commanding high fees for their knowledge. Writers can monetize their craft through blogging, freelancing, or publishing e-books. Success requires dedication to a chosen path, realistic self-assessment, and perseverance.

Redirect passion

Injecting passion into your work can transform mundane tasks into unique offerings that capture customer interest. By creatively applying specialized skills to meet industry needs, like a graphic artist did with cupcakes, you can carve out a niche. This approach can lead to unexpected opportunities, such as a fitness-focused accountant providing tailored services to gyms. Differentiation and adding value are crucial; they turn passions into marketable assets that stand out. Embrace creativity, risk-taking, and perseverance to write your own success story.

Exploit micro-markets

To build a lucrative business, focus on a niche market with a unique offering in high demand. Differentiate with one-of-a-kind products, cater to strong customer desire, and set a premium price point. Use online tools like Bubbl.us for brainstorming, Popurls.com for trending topics, and Addictomatic.com to identify underserved niches. For example, an artist increased sales by targeting wineries with vineyard paintings, showing the power of niche marketing.

Fill information gaps

Leverage your passion and expertise to create information products that fill knowledge gaps for others. Formats include books, audio/video content, online content, and email newsletters. These products can be monetized through sales, subscriptions, and advertising, providing multiple revenue opportunities. They also allow you to build an audience and expand your offerings over time. By identifying and addressing what people struggle with or wish they had access to, you can turn your enthusiasm into profit, creating a win-win situation where you indulge your passion while helping others.

Build a global following

Gaining expert status in your field of passion is a multifaceted process that involves a deep commitment to learning, sharing knowledge, and actively engaging with your community. To become an expert, one must first immerse themselves in comprehensive education about their passion. This includes reading books, taking both free and paid courses, attending conferences, and seeking out mentors who can provide guidance and insight. Mastery of current best practices and staying abreast of the latest developments in your field are crucial. Launching a blog is an effective way to showcase your expertise. By consistently producing content that demonstrates your knowledge and insights, you build a reputation as an authority in your field. Engaging with your audience through comments and discussions further solidifies your status. Platforms like Blogger, Typepad, and WordPress are popular choices for starting a blog.

Microblogging platforms, such as Twitter, offer a way to share bite-sized updates and engage with your audience in real-time. This helps maintain visibility and keeps your name in circulation. Similarly, participating in social media conversations on platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace allows you to highlight your expertise and engage with a larger community.

Take the plunge

Pushing past the fear of failure is critical when embarking on an unconventional career path. The key is to channel nervous energy into concrete actions that set you apart. Do something radically different than the status quo if you truly want to end up somewhere new and improved. Success in this arena requires more than just thinking and planning—it demands real effort.

The initial plunge into career rebellion can be daunting. Early on, you’ll likely face failures as you figure things out. It may take time for others to view your nontraditional choices as progress rather than regression. To smooth the transition, implement strategies to power through hurdles. First, have systems in place to process failures, since you’ll encounter plenty. When things go awry, briefly analyze what happened, learn from mistakes, then refocus your energies on moving forward.

Don’t obsess over failures as no good comes from dwelling on the past. Quantify what went wrong, make adjustments, and get back to the business of making positive things transpire. If you catch yourself procrastinating, take stock of the real costs of inaction, both now and in the future. Use this to motivate replacing inertia with concrete efforts to advance. Don’t accept less from yourself than you’re capable of attaining.

Second, take time daily to envision your eventual success—to immerse yourself in the feelings of accomplishing your ultimate aims. Cultivating this belief and clarity is self-empowering and fuels action. Invest in visualizing desired outcomes and take small steps daily to inch closer to your goals. Some career rebels even create vision boards covered with images representing their ideal lives and vocations already manifested. The more vivid this depiction, the better.
