Hikers step around the puddle, widening the path into a muddy scar, and the scar keeps growing. It looks like neglect, but more often it is a design flaw laid down years earlier by well-meaning people who dug a line up a hillside and hoped for the best. Carl Demrow, a longtime trail worker in the mountains of the Northeast, has spent decades repairing exactly these mistakes — and, in his manual, explaining how to avoid making them in the first place.

His book, The Complete Guide to Trail Building and Maintenance, grew out of the working knowledge of the Appalachian Mountain Club and became a reference used by the people who look after public land, including crews in the U.S. Forest and Park Services. It is not a romantic book about the outdoors. It is a practical account of how a footpath is planned, cut, drained, and kept alive — the difference between a trail that dissolves in a decade and one that holds for generations. The surprising part, reading it, is how little of the work is about walking and how much is about water.

What comes through, page after page, is that a trail is a built thing, an act of engineering disguised as a walk in the woods. Demrow treats that long view as the whole point. Building a trail is easy; building one that lasts is a discipline with its own logic, and most of that logic runs against instinct.

Chapter 1 — Water is the enemy, and the answer

Demrow keeps returning to one idea that reorganizes everything else: a trail does not wear out mainly from feet. It wears out from water. Rain lands on the tread, gathers into a thin sheet, and starts to run. Once it runs, it picks up soil, and once it carries soil it cuts. Give water a straight downhill line to follow and it will turn your carefully cleared path into a streambed within a few seasons. Almost every eroded trail he has repaired was, at root, a trail that let water travel along it instead of across it.

The instinctive way to climb a hill is straight up. It is also the worst possible design, because it hands water a channel aimed directly downslope. The fall-line trail is the single most common and most destructive mistake in the book. Rain follows the same line as hikers, the tread deepens into a trough, and the trough concentrates still more water, accelerating its own decay. What looks like the efficient route becomes the route that destroys itself fastest.

Chapter 2 — Reading the land before the first cut

Long before anyone swings a tool, Demrow insists, the real work is layout — walking the ground and deciding where the trail will go. This is the stage that determines whether a trail will be sustainable or a permanent liability, and it is the stage most often rushed. A poorly located trail cannot be fixed by good construction; it can only be relocated. So the planner reads slope, soil, drainage, and the features people actually want to reach, then finds a line that reconciles all of them.

The governing number is grade — how steeply the trail climbs. Demrow leans on the principle that a trail's average grade should generally stay well below the grade of the hillside it crosses, and that no long stretch should run straight down the fall line. There is also the half rule of thumb passed among trail builders: the trail's grade should not exceed half the slope of the hill, so that water crossing the tread always has somewhere lower to go and never runs along the path itself. Gentle, angled, patient — the durable line is rarely the shortest.

Chapter 3 — The craft of the tread underfoot

With the line chosen, the book turns to construction — the physical shaping of the surface people walk on, the tread. On a side slope, this usually means cutting a bench: digging into the hillside to create a level or gently outsloped shelf, with the excavated soil either removed or compacted into the outer edge. Demrow is precise about the difference between full-bench construction, cut entirely into solid ground, and partial-bench work that relies partly on fill, which is weaker and more prone to slumping. The stronger method costs more labor and lasts far longer.

Then there is rock, the trail builder's most durable and most demanding material. Demrow devotes real attention to stonework because stone, set well, outlasts everything else. Steps, retaining walls, and paved sections of tread are built the way a mason builds — each stone chosen for its shape, seated on a solid base, tilted back into the slope, and locked against its neighbors so that weight and gravity hold it rather than working it loose. A step that rocks underfoot will be gone in a few years; one set properly can hold a century.

Chapter 4 — Why a good trail is never finished

Step back from the mattock and the water bar and a larger idea emerges from Demrow's book: a trail is not an object you complete but a relationship you maintain. It sits at the meeting point of three forces that never stop pushing — the passage of feet, the movement of water, and the slow reclaiming pull of the surrounding land. Build it well and you tilt the balance in your favor, but you never win outright. The forest is always trying to take the path back, and water is always looking for a new line to cut.

This is why maintenance runs through the manual as its own serious subject rather than an afterthought. Drainage structures silt up and need cleaning. Vegetation encroaches and has to be cut back so the corridor stays open and people do not braid new paths around the overgrowth. Blazes fade, blowdowns block the way, tread slumps and needs rebuilding. Demrow frames the routine inspection — walking the trail after storms, clearing every drainage, catching small failures before they compound — as the real ongoing work. A trail neglected for a few years can require more repair than it took to build.

Conclusion

Go back to that rutted, widening scar on the ridge. Demrow's book turns it from a mystery into a diagnosis: somewhere upslope, water found a line down the tread and no one gave it a place to leave. The fix is rarely more gravel or a sterner sign asking people to stay on the path. It is drainage, grade, and a line relocated to work with the slope instead of against it — the same principles that should have shaped the trail the first time. What reads as neglect is usually a design decision coming due.
