In 1979, a computer was still mostly a machine for specialists — a beige box wired to a green screen, spoken to in commands you had to memorize. The typewriter still ruled the desk, the notebook still ruled the meeting, and the idea that a person might sit down and simply move things around on a screen with a small rolling device was, at best, a rumor drifting out of a research lab in Palo Alto. Inside Apple, a scrappy company that had gotten rich selling the Apple II, a few engineers were about to spend five years trying to turn that rumor into something you could buy.

Andy Hertzfeld was one of them. He wrote much of the system software for the Macintosh, and years later he collected the stories — his own and his colleagues' — into a book, Revolution in the Valley. It isn't a corporate history or a heroic founder myth. It's closer to a scrapbook: the arguments about typefaces, the all-nighters, the demos that crashed, the sabotaged deadlines, the flag someone stitched to fly over the building. Told from inside the room, it captures what it actually felt like to build a thing nobody had built before.

The finished machine arrived on January 24, 1984, and it did change the desk, the office, and eventually the way most of us think about computers at all. But the book is less interested in the triumph than in the mess that produced it — the small group of people who cared, unreasonably, about how a window should close and how a font should curve.

Chapter 1 — A skunkworks with a pirate flag

The Macintosh didn't begin as Apple's flagship. It began in 1979 as a side project championed by Jef Raskin, a Apple employee with a stubborn idea: a computer cheap enough and simple enough that an ordinary person could use it without a manual. He named it after his favorite variety of apple, misspelling it slightly along the way. For a while it was a research curiosity, tolerated more than funded, running in a corner while the rest of Apple worried about the Apple III and the pricier Lisa.

Then Steve Jobs took an interest, and everything shifted. Jobs pushed Raskin aside, took over the project, and reshaped it around what he had seen at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center — a screen you pointed at, windows you moved, a mouse. What had been a modest text machine became a bet on an entirely new way of using a computer. Raskin, whose vision had started it all, eventually left. The tension between his idea and Jobs's would mark the machine for good.

Chapter 2 — Small team, impossible deadline

The Macintosh was built by an astonishingly small group. At its core, the software was written by a handful of programmers, the hardware by a handful of engineers, and Hertzfeld is precise about how few hands actually shaped the thing — a fact that seems almost impossible now, when a phone's operating system occupies thousands of people. Everyone knew everyone. A bad decision had a name attached to it, and so did a good one.

Jobs drove the group with a mix of inspiration and pressure that the book neither hides nor entirely condemns. He was capable of dismissing weeks of work as garbage, of demanding the impossible on a timeline that made no sense, and of changing his mind overnight. He was also capable of making people believe their work was the most important thing in the world. Hertzfeld coined a phrase for the effect Jobs had in a room — the reality distortion field — a bubble in which deadlines shrank, obstacles vanished, and things that couldn't be done got done anyway.

Chapter 3 — Where the tiny details lived

Read the book expecting grand strategy and you'll be surprised by how much of it is about small things. A remarkable share of the stories concern decisions most users would never consciously notice: how a rectangle should have rounded corners instead of sharp ones, how fast a menu should open, what sound the machine should make, how the little watch cursor should tick while you waited. To the team, these were not trivial. They were the whole point.

The rounded corners are the emblematic case. Hertzfeld recounts how Bill Atkinson, the brilliant programmer behind much of the graphics software, worked out a fast way to draw rectangles, and Jobs immediately demanded rounded ones instead. Atkinson resisted — it was harder, and who needed it? Jobs walked him outside and pointed at all the rounded rectangles in the world, on signs and cars and no-parking notices. Atkinson went back and figured it out. The rounded rectangle became a signature of the whole interface.

Chapter 4 — Building a machine as if it were a signature

Step back from the crashes and the all-nighters and a larger idea comes into view. The Macintosh was a tool for the mind — a thing meant to let ordinary people write, draw, and think — and it was made by people who treated its construction as a form of self-expression. That's the paradox the book keeps circling. A mass-produced object, stamped out by the millions, carried inside it the specific tastes and stubbornness of a few dozen individuals who refused to disappear behind the work.

Casting their names into the case was not a marketing stunt; it was an argument about what the thing was. Jobs told the team that real artists sign their work. He meant that the machine wasn't a neutral appliance but something authored, the way a book or a painting is authored. Hertzfeld's whole book is an extension of that idea — it insists on remembering who chose the font, who fought for the rounded corners, who stayed up all night to shave a few bytes. The residue of those choices is the part that endured.

Conclusion

On January 24, 1984, the Macintosh was unveiled, and after months of impossible pressure the little machine on the stage spoke, drew, and did the things the team had bled to make it do. It shipped unfinished in places, sold unevenly at first, and would go through years of struggle before its way of doing things became everyone's way. But the desk was never quite the same. The typewriter and the notebook slowly gave ground to the thing a few pirates had built in a back room.
