Terry Burnham is an economist by training, which is an odd credential for a book about appetite, lust, and the raid on the fridge at midnight. But that mismatch is exactly the point of Mean Genes, the book he wrote with biologist Jay Phelan in 2000. Economists study how people are supposed to behave — rationally, in their own long-term interest — and then spend their careers documenting all the ways people don't. Burnham's answer to why we don't is blunt: we are not run by the person we think we are. We are run, a good part of the time, by genes that were shaped for a world that vanished a very long time ago.
The book's central move is to take the failures we usually treat as moral — the diet abandoned, the credit card maxed out, the resolution broken by February — and re-read them as biology doing its job a little too well. The craving for sugar and fat, the pull toward risk, the inability to save, the itch that no amount of getting quite scratches: none of these are bugs, in Burnham's telling. They are features. They kept our ancestors alive on the savanna. The trouble is that the savanna is gone and the wiring stayed.
What makes Mean Genes more than a catalogue of bad habits is its stubborn refusal to moralize. Burnham doesn't scold. He treats our instincts the way an engineer treats an old machine still running old code — with respect for what it was built to do, and clear eyes about where it now sends us wrong. That reframing is the whole game, and it changes what self-control is even supposed to mean.

01Chapter 1 — The gene that wants you fat
Start with the most familiar failure of all: the fridge. Burnham opens Mean Genes on hunger because it is the cleanest case. We crave sweet, we crave fat, we crave salt, and we crave them in quantities that make no sense for a body that spends its day in a chair. Standing in a modern supermarket, this looks like a design flaw. Set the same craving on the African savanna a hundred thousand years ago and it looks like genius.
For almost all of human history, calories were scarce and unpredictable. An animal that stumbled on ripe fruit or a fatty carcass and thought "I'll pass, I'm watching my weight" left fewer descendants than the one that gorged. Fat was insurance against the next famine. So the genes that whispered eat now, eat all of it, worry later were the genes that won. We are the children of the gorgers. The appetite that feels like weakness is, in Burnham's framing, an inheritance that kept our line from starving.
02Chapter 2 — Debt, thrills, and the horizon we can't see
From the body, Burnham turns to the wallet, and finds the same machinery at work. We save badly and borrow eagerly. Offered a smaller reward now or a larger reward later, most of us grab the now — and we do it even when the arithmetic clearly favors waiting. Economists call this steep discounting of the future. Burnham calls it another old gene doing old work.
On the savanna, the future was genuinely uncertain. A meal you banked for later might rot, get stolen, or become irrelevant if you didn't survive the week. A bird in the hand really was worth more than two in a distant, unreliable bush. The animal that heavily favored the present was, on average, the animal that lived. We inherited that bias toward now, and it collides head-on with a modern economy built on compound interest, retirement accounts, and rewards that only arrive if you can wait decades to collect them.
03Chapter 3 — The chemistry of the itch we can't scratch
The strangest chapter of Mean Genes deals with a puzzle almost everyone has felt but few can name: why getting what we want so rarely stays satisfying. The raise that thrilled us becomes the new normal within months. The new phone dazzles for a week and then simply becomes the phone. Burnham argues this is not a failure of gratitude. It is a feature wired into the brain's reward chemistry, and it too was useful once.
The relevant system runs largely on dopamine, and dopamine, Burnham stresses, is less about pleasure than about pursuit. It fires for the wanting, not the having. An animal permanently content with its last meal, its current territory, its existing mate would stop striving — and stopping striving, in a competitive world, was a slow route to losing out. The genes that kept us perpetually a little dissatisfied kept us moving, foraging, improving. Contentment was selected against. Restlessness got passed on.
04Chapter 4 — A body built for a world that no longer exists
Step back from the individual cravings and a single idea holds Mean Genes together: we are living with an ancient body in a modern world, and almost all of our self-sabotage lives in the gap between the two. Burnham's genes are not malicious, despite the title. They are simply out of date. They were fine-tuned across millions of years for a life of scarcity, danger, and small wandering bands — and then, in the blink of an evolutionary eye, that life was replaced by supermarkets, credit lines, and infinite feeds. Evolution had no time to catch up. The wiring that fit the old world now misfires in the new one.
What Burnham draws from this is a quietly radical reframing of what we owe our instincts. We tend to treat gut feelings as a kind of inner wisdom, a compass to be trusted. Mean Genes suggests the opposite in many domains: the instinct is a rival, an old set of preferences pulling toward goals — maximum calories, maximum offspring, minimum delay — that are no longer ours. The impulse still speaks in the confident voice of survival, but it is answering a question the world stopped asking a long time ago.
05Conclusion
Burnham ends more or less where he began, back with the economist's original puzzle: why don't people act in their own long-term interest? The answer that runs through Mean Genes is that there is no single "self" whose interest is at stake. There is a planning self that wants health, savings, and calm, and there is an older self encoded in the genes that wants calories, risk, and the next hit of novelty right now. Most of what we call failure is just the second self winning an argument the first one keeps forgetting it's in.
