Science as our moral compass

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, an old man in his eighties kept accepting invitations to lecture across Europe — in Vienna, in Germany, in Italy — on subjects that ranged from ancient Greek cosmology to the tuning of instruments in an orchestra. Karl Popper had spent most of the century arguing about what makes science science, and about why open societies survive and closed ones rot. Now, near the end, he gathered these talks and essays into a book with a title that sounds almost naive coming from one of the sharpest logicians of his age: In Search of a Better World.
The naivety is the point. Popper opens by declaring, flatly, that he regards scientific knowledge as the most important kind of knowledge we have — not because it is certain, but precisely because it isn't. He had spent decades dismantling the idea that science gives us proven truths. What it gives us instead, he argued, is something more useful and more human: a way of being wrong on purpose, of putting our guesses out where they can be knocked down, and of getting a little closer to the world each time one of them falls.
That move — from certainty to correction — is the spine of the whole book, and Popper runs it through everything. Greek astronomy, Kant's Enlightenment, the propaganda of totalitarian states, the self-criticism of a composer revising a score. The essays are scattered in subject but strangely unified in temper, and they add up to an argument that the method of the sciences and the ethics of a free society are, at bottom, the same thing.

01Chapter 1 — Knowledge grows by admitting we were wrong
Popper's starting move is to reject the picture almost everyone carries around: that knowledge is a store of confirmed facts we accumulate the way a bank accumulates deposits. On that view, the scientist observes carefully, gathers enough instances, and generalizes upward into a law. Popper thought this was backwards. We do not begin with neutral observation, he argued — we begin with problems, and with bold guesses about how to solve them. Observation comes later, and its job is not to build the theory but to test it.
The example he returned to often is the leap the early Greeks made. Long before anyone could measure much of anything, thinkers like Anaximander proposed that the Earth hangs unsupported in space, held in place by nothing at all. It was, by the standards of the time, an outrageous guess — and a magnificent one, because it broke with the obvious assumption that the ground must rest on something. For Popper, this was the true birth of the scientific attitude: not caution, but daring, followed by the willingness to let the daring guess be criticized.
02Chapter 2 — No authority, not even experience
If knowledge advances through criticism, then no source of knowledge can be treated as beyond criticism — and this is where Popper turns genuinely radical. The whole tradition of Western thought, he argued, had been distorted by a single wrong question: what is the ultimate source of true knowledge? Some answered reason, some answered the senses, and the two camps fought for centuries. Popper's reply was that the question itself is misguided. There are no authoritative sources. Every source can mislead us, and the only thing that matters is whether a claim survives testing.
This includes experience itself. The empiricist assumes that observation is the bedrock, the place where doubt stops. But observations are never raw, Popper insisted; they are always shaped by the expectations and theories we bring to them. We see what we are prepared to look for. So experience cannot be the final court of appeal — it too is a witness that can be questioned, and often should be. There is no floor of certainty anywhere in the building.
03Chapter 3 — Optimism as a moral duty
Popper had watched the twentieth century do its worst. Driven out of Vienna, he wrote his great political work during the Second World War, aware that the totalitarian regimes of his time were built on the opposite of everything he believed — on the claim to possess a total, final truth about history and society, a truth that justified silencing everyone who disagreed. Yet the older Popper of these essays is strikingly, almost stubbornly, optimistic, and he treats that optimism as an obligation rather than a mood.
His argument is partly factual. Against the fashionable gloom of intellectuals who declared modern life a catastrophe, he pointed out how much had measurably improved: violence had declined across long stretches of history, medicine had abolished suffering that earlier centuries accepted as fate, and ordinary people in open societies lived with freedoms and comforts unimaginable to their ancestors. To ignore this, he thought, was not sophistication but a kind of ingratitude, and a dangerous one, because despair invites the strongman who promises to fix everything at once.
04Chapter 4 — The open society and its instruments
Step back from the individual essays and a single shape emerges: the method of science and the ethics of a free society turn out to be the same method wearing different clothes. Both rest on the willingness to be corrected. A laboratory works because a bad theory can be exposed and dropped without anyone being punished for having proposed it. A democracy works, in Popper's reading, for exactly the same reason — because it lets us remove a bad government without bloodshed, treating each administration as a hypothesis the public is entitled to falsify at the next election.
This is why he insisted the real question of politics is not who should rule but how we can arrange things so that bad rulers do the least damage and can be got rid of peacefully. A society that forbids criticism, that treats its rulers or its doctrines as beyond question, is closed in exactly the way a dogmatic pseudo-science is closed: it has arranged never to discover its own mistakes. And a system that cannot learn its mistakes cannot improve. Freedom of speech, for Popper, is not a luxury or a courtesy — it is the social equivalent of the experiment, the mechanism by which a community keeps testing itself.
05Conclusion
The old man touring Europe with his lectures was making, over and over, the same modest and enormous claim. Science matters most not because it is certain but because it has taught us the one trick that reliably makes things better: put your best guess out in the open, invite the world to knock it down, and treat every collapse as a gift. Popper's title promises a search, not an arrival, and that grammar is deliberate. There is no better world waiting to be reached, only a slightly better one always available to be built from the wreckage of our latest mistake.
