In the late 1930s, a young Harvard botanist named Richard Evans Schultes went into the mountains of Oaxaca to find a mushroom the Aztecs had called teonanácatl — "flesh of the gods." Spanish chroniclers of the sixteenth century had described Indians eating it and seeing visions, and colonial priests had done their best to stamp the practice out as devil worship. For four centuries afterward, most scholars assumed the reports were exaggerations, or that the sacred food had been peyote all along. Schultes found the mushrooms still in use, still gathered in secret, still treated as holy. He spent the rest of his life doing the same thing across the tropics: tracking down the plants people take to leave their ordinary minds behind.

Out of decades of fieldwork came a small, densely illustrated book — a Golden Guide, the kind of pocket handbook Americans used to identify birds and rocks — that did something no scientific volume had quite done before. It laid out the world's hallucinogenic plants side by side, in full color, and treated them all with the same steady attention: what they are, what they do to the body, and who has used them, and why. Snakeroot and morning glory, peyote and ayahuasca, fly agaric and the seeds of a Mexican vine, all given the dignity of a proper entry.

The framing is what makes it unusual. Schultes did not write about "drugs" in the modern sense, nor about crime, nor about escape. He wrote as a botanist who had watched shamans work, and who understood that for most of human history these plants were not recreation but instruments — of healing, of prophecy, of contact with a world the community believed was real.

Chapter 1 — A field guide to the mind

Schultes begins with a definition, because the word had been used loosely for a long time. A hallucinogen, in his account, is a plant — or a chemical in it — that acts on the central nervous system to produce changes in perception, mood, and thought without, at ordinary doses, causing stupor or death. That distinction matters. Plenty of plants poison, sedate, or intoxicate; only a small set reliably alters the way the mind takes in the world while leaving the person awake to experience it. He preferred the term "hallucinogen" but noted the alternatives that circulated — psychotomimetic, psychedelic — each carrying a slightly different judgment about what was happening.

The number of such plants, he points out, is surprisingly small against the vastness of the plant kingdom. Of the hundreds of thousands of species botanists have named, only around a hundred or so have been used anywhere as hallucinogens, and the great majority of those belong to the flowering plants. A handful come from fungi. The chemistry that produces vision is rare, and where it occurs it tends to cluster in a few plant families — the nightshades, the morning glories, certain mushrooms, a scattering of others.

Chapter 2 — The chemistry of the vision

Having sorted the plants, Schultes turns to the question of how they work — how a leaf or a seed can rearrange perception. The active agents, he explains, are for the most part alkaloids: nitrogen-containing compounds that plants manufacture, often as a defense against being eaten, and that happen to fit the chemistry of the human nervous system with unusual precision. The vision is not magic. It is a molecule slotting into places in the brain that were built to receive the body's own signals.

He walks through the main chemical families without turning the page into a laboratory. There are the tryptamines, close cousins of a compound the brain itself produces, found in the sacred mushrooms as psilocybin, in ayahuasca, in the snuffs of the Amazon. There are the phenylethylamines, the group to which peyote's mescaline belongs. And there are the tropane alkaloids of the nightshade family — atropine, scopolamine — which produce a darker, deliriant state, closer to true hallucination in the clinical sense, where the taker cannot tell vision from reality.

Chapter 3 — The plants people chose

The heart of the book is the roll call of plants themselves, each tied to the people who use it. Peyote, a small spineless cactus of northern Mexico and the American Southwest, has been eaten in religious ceremony for at least two thousand years and remains central to the Native American Church, where the visions are understood as a form of prayer and healing rather than entertainment. Schultes describes the all-night ceremonies, the drumming, the careful ritual context that no laboratory account of mescaline can capture.

Then there are the mushrooms Schultes himself helped bring to scholarly attention — the Psilocybe species of the Mexican highlands, gathered by Mazatec healers and used in curing rituals led, in the best-known case, by a woman named María Sabina. And there is ayahuasca, the Amazonian brew made by boiling a jungle vine with other plants, which shamans across the western Amazon drink to diagnose illness, to find game, to travel in the spirit. The brew is a small pharmacological marvel: one plant supplies the vision-producing compound, another supplies the chemical that lets it survive digestion. That two ingredients had to be combined, out of a rainforest of possibilities, is a fact Schultes returns to with quiet astonishment.

Chapter 4 — What the West mistook for poison

Step back from the individual entries and the book becomes an argument about seeing. For four centuries, Europeans who encountered these plants filed them under categories that could not hold them. Spanish priests saw devil worship and tried to burn it out; the very existence of the sacred mushroom was doubted by scholars into the twentieth century partly because the church had been so effective at driving it underground. Later, a different Western vocabulary took over — the language of narcotics, of addiction, of crime — and it fit no better. Schultes writes against both, quietly, by refusing either frame and describing what he actually found.

What he found was that hallucinogenic plants sat at the center of religion, medicine, and knowledge for the cultures that used them, not at the margins. The shaman who drank ayahuasca was performing the functions a Western society distributes among doctor, priest, and judge. The plant was sacred technology, and to call it merely a drug was to mistake the tool for a vice. This is why he insisted on treating the subject botanically and ethnographically at once: the plant's chemistry explained what happened in the body, but only the culture explained what it meant.

Conclusion

The book ends where Schultes's own life had begun as a scientist: with the recognition that plants humans have used for millennia still hold questions worth asking. He had gone to Oaxaca to confirm a four-hundred-year-old rumor and had found it true, then spent his career extending the discovery across two continents. The Golden Guide gathers that work into a form a curious reader could carry into the field, each plant painted in color, each entry giving equal weight to the molecule and the people.
