In the mid-1990s, a British engineer named Steve Grand shut himself in a spare room and set out to build living things. Not robots that mimicked life, not chatbots that faked it — actual creatures, with metabolisms, hormones, nervous systems and a will of their own, running inside a personal computer. The result shipped in 1996 as Creatures, a piece of software in which small furry organisms called Norns hatched from eggs, learned words, got sick, bred, and died. Millions of people bought it. Some grew so attached to their Norns that they held funerals for them online. Grand had wanted something more unsettling than a hit game, and in a sense he got it.

His book, Creation, is the account of what he was really up to. Grand is one of the leading figures in what researchers call artificial life — the attempt to make life happen, rather than merely simulate it, using code, chemistry, or machinery. He is not modest about the stakes. The old dream of Dr Frankenstein, of Pygmalion, of every myth in which a maker breathes spirit into matter, is, he argues, no longer myth. We are close. And the reason we can get close is that we have been wrong about what life is.

That wrongness is the spine of the whole book. We tend to think life is a special kind of stuff, a spark that either inhabits a thing or doesn't. Grand thinks that is exactly the mistake — and that clearing it up is what makes creation possible, and what makes it strange.

Chapter 1 — The engineer who wanted to build a mind

Grand did not come to this from a biology department or an AI lab. He was a self-taught engineer with an obsessive itch: he wanted to understand how a lump of matter could become a mind, and he had decided the only honest way to understand it was to build one. Not to write a program that answered questions convincingly — that struck him as a cheat — but to grow something from the bottom up, and see if a mind fell out.

Creatures was the vehicle. On the surface it looked like a virtual pet, a cousin of the Tamagotchi that was everywhere at the time. Underneath, Grand had built something far odder. Each Norn had a genome that specified how to assemble a brain of several hundred neurons, a biochemistry of simulated hormones and chemicals sloshing through its body, and drives — hunger, fear, boredom — that those chemicals produced. Nobody scripted what a Norn would do next. Its behaviour emerged from the machinery, the way a real animal's does.

Chapter 2 — Not the stuff, but the pattern

The central idea of Creation is deceptively plain: life is not a substance, it's a pattern. We instinctively imagine that living things are made of some special material, or animated by some special force, and that if we could just find it we'd have the secret. Grand thinks this is a category error we've inherited from centuries of intuition. What matters about you is not the atoms — those are swapped out constantly, so that the you of a decade ago shares almost no physical material with the you reading this. What persists is the arrangement, the process, the pattern that keeps rebuilding itself out of whatever matter is passing through.

He leans on the idea of a persistent phenomenon — something that maintains its form even as its constituents flow through it. A whirlpool is his favourite example. A whirlpool in a stream is real, has a shape, can move, can resist being disturbed, and yet it is not a thing so much as a stable pattern in flowing water. No particular water molecule belongs to it. Take a snapshot and you'd struggle to say where the whirlpool 'is'. It's a dance, not a dancer. Grand's claim is that living things are the same kind of entity, only unimaginably more elaborate: patterns that hold themselves together by actively doing something.

Chapter 3 — Persistence, and other tricks life keeps

Once you treat life as a self-maintaining pattern, you can start asking what a pattern has to do to keep existing — and that question turns out to organise a lot of biology. A whirlpool persists because energy keeps flowing through it. Living things go much further: they actively work to preserve their own arrangement, repairing damage, gathering resources, fending off the constant tendency of things to fall apart. Grand walks through how feedback loops, hierarchy and self-organisation let a system hold its shape against the world's steady push toward disorder. Life, in this telling, is matter that has learned to insist on itself.

From there he builds upward. A single self-maintaining unit isn't much. But stack such units, let them cooperate and specialise, and you get bodies, then nervous systems, then behaviour that looks purposeful. The Norn brain is his worked example: neurons that respond to the body's chemical state, that learn by adjusting their connections when things go well or badly, that produce actions which feed back into the chemistry. Nowhere in this is there a controller issuing commands. There is only a web of parts, each following simple local rules, out of which coordinated behaviour rises like the whirlpool rises from the water.

Chapter 4 — The line we thought we knew

Step back from the Norns and the whirlpools, and the book is really arguing against a boundary most of us carry around without examining it: the line between the living and the made, the born and the built. That line feels self-evident. Grand's whole project is designed to erode it. If a living thing is a persistent, self-maintaining pattern rather than a special substance, then there is no deep reason a pattern of the right kind couldn't run on a computer, or be assembled from parts we chose. The category 'artificial' starts to look less like a fence and more like a comment on how a thing came to exist, not on what it is.

That has an obvious edge to it, and Grand doesn't dodge the Frankenstein comparison — he invites it. To claim that life and mind are buildable is to claim that they are not sacred in the way we half-assume. It puts the maker in a genuinely godlike position, and the book takes seriously that this is both thrilling and disquieting. When players held funerals for dead Norns, they were reacting to something real: a pattern had persisted, engaged them, and then stopped. Whether it was 'really' alive turns out to be less a fact to discover than a decision about where we draw our circle of concern.

Conclusion

Creatures sold in the millions and is still remembered as a landmark of artificial life, but Grand always treated the game as a means rather than an end. What he was after was proof of concept — a demonstration, however primitive, that behaviour, learning and something like inner drive could be grown from the bottom up rather than scripted from the top down. The Norns hatching, learning words and dying were not a metaphor for life. They were, on his own terms, a first modest instance of it.
