The 8th habit
Shift from effectiveness to greatness.
Description
The eighth habit of highly effective individuals is encapsulated by the principle of discovering one's unique voice and encouraging others to find theirs as well.
This habit is not merely an extension of the original seven; it operates on a different plane that amplifies the effectiveness of the pre-existing habits. It's about harnessing personal strengths and inspiring the same level of self-discovery and growth in others.

01Discover your voice
To truly find one's voice is to immerse oneself in endeavors that not only utilize one's innate abilities but also ignite one's deepest passions. It is about pursuing a path of significance in one's career, recognizing an unfulfilled need, and then fully deploying every ounce of talent and enthusiasm to fulfill that need.
Finding one's voice is synonymous with choosing a journey towards excellence rather than succumbing to the mediocrity that often pervades our lives.
For many individuals, the greatest source of frustration stems from the realization that their lives are not aligned with the pursuit of greatness and meaningful contribution. Instead, they find themselves entrenched in careers that operate at a fraction of their potential. They are acutely aware of the vast array of challenges and issues that plague society, yet they lack the internal fortitude and ethical authority to be a catalyst for change.
To surmount this obstacle, it is imperative to embark on a personal quest to discover one's unique voice. This discovery ignites an internal flame that fuels an unwavering drive and commitment. However, to truly unearth one's voice, one must first grasp a straightforward philosophy of life.
A holistic individual comprises four fundamental elements: a physical body, an independent and analytical mind, an emotional heart, and a philosophical or spiritual center known as the soul. Each of these elements is driven by a core need or motivation: the body's need to sustain life, the mind's desire for knowledge, the heart's yearning for love, and the spirit's aspiration to create a lasting legacy. The most elevated expressions of these human capacities are discipline for the body, vision for the mind, passion for the heart, and conscience for the spirit. When one begins to comprehend, honor, and ultimately harmonize these noble expressions, a powerful synergy emerges. This energy revitalizes the individual, awakening them to their true potential.
By engaging in work that leverages one's talents and passions, and addresses the callings of one's conscience, one discovers their voice. This is often characterized as finding one's true calling or unlocking the code of one's soul.
The human voice is distinct and significant because it resides at the confluence of one's innate talents, fervent passions, the necessity to earn a livelihood through valuable contributions, and the guiding compass of one's conscience. This intersection is where one's unique voice is found.
02Encourage voice discovery
Once you have discovered your unique voice, the journey towards a sense of accomplishment can be furthered by aiding others in their quest to find their distinctive voices as well.
This is often achieved within the framework of an organization since the majority of the world's endeavors are carried out by collective entities rather than solitary individuals. To truly inspire others is to acknowledge, honor, and craft meaningful opportunities for them to articulate their voices.
The term 'inspire' originates from the Latin 'inspirare', which translates to breathing life into another. This is precisely the action you undertake when you foster and exert a positive influence on others within your organization to find their voices.
When you articulate your voice through the four dimensions of vision, discipline, passion, and conscience, you exemplify personal leadership. For an organization to express its voice in a similar manner, its leaders must embody four corresponding roles.
Firstly, Modeling requires leaders to exemplify excellence, creating a corporate culture that aligns with the organization's vision and future direction, thereby inspiring trust. Secondly, Pathfinding involves collaboratively developing a strategy that enables the organization to transition from its current state to its envisioned future, thus creating order. Thirdly, Aligning necessitates the establishment of structures, processes, and systems that foster desired behaviors and maintain focus, providing a form of institutionalized moral authority. Lastly, Empowering involves concentrating the organization's talent on required results rather than prescribed methods, allowing for autonomy in execution.
Albert Schweitzer once said that at some point in everyone's life, our inner fire dims and is reignited by an encounter with another person. We should be grateful for those who rekindle our inner spirit.
In the context of organizations, focus is achieved through modeling and pathfinding, which assist in finding the organization's voice and attaining greatness.
There are several actions you can take to build and enhance your focus, regardless of your position within the organization. You can strive for personal excellence, take responsibility for your actions, avoid negativity, empathize with your superiors, and remain steadfast in your principles.
