Why humanity faces extinction

In 1945, physicist Enrico Fermi ran a betting pool at the Trinity test site in the New Mexico desert. The wager, among some of the sharpest minds of the century, was whether the first atomic detonation would ignite the atmosphere and burn the planet clean. They had done the math and judged it unlikely. But they lit the fuse anyway, on a morning in July, without being entirely sure. The bomb went off, the atmosphere held, and the twentieth century got its opening scene.
For the Oxford philosopher Toby Ord, that morning marks a hinge in the human story. Before Trinity, no generation had ever held the means to end the whole project — every catastrophe, however vast, left survivors and a future. After Trinity, we crossed into a stretch of history where a handful of decisions, or accidents, could foreclose everything that might have come next. Ord calls this stretch the Precipice: a narrow window in which our power has outrun our wisdom, and the stakes have quietly become total.
His 2020 book of the same name is not a doom-scroll. It is a careful accounting — part philosophy, part risk assessment — of what could actually end us, how likely each thing is, and what a species that wanted to survive its own adolescence would do about it. The tone is cool where the subject is hot, and that coolness is the point.

01Chapter 1 — The century that decides everything
Ord's core claim is disarmingly simple to state and hard to shake. For all of human history, no single event could have destroyed our entire potential. Empires fell, plagues emptied cities, but the species and its future carried on. Something changed in the middle of the twentieth century. With the atomic bomb, humanity acquired, for the first time, a genuine capacity to wreck its own long-term prospects. And the technologies arriving since — engineered biology, advanced artificial intelligence — are extending that capacity faster than our institutions can absorb it.
He puts a number on it, and he is careful about how. Ord estimates the chance of an existential catastrophe this century at roughly one in six — the odds of a single throw of a die. He is upfront that this is an informed judgment, not a measured fact, and that reasonable people will land elsewhere. The figure is meant less as a prediction than as an order of magnitude: not one in a million, not a certainty, but a risk on the scale of Russian roulette played once with our collective future.
02Chapter 2 — The dull threats and the risky new ones
Ord sorts the risks into two families, and the sorting itself is instructive. First come the natural hazards: asteroid and comet impacts, supervolcanic eruptions, nearby stellar explosions. These are the threats that fill disaster films, and Ord treats them with respect and then, largely, sets them aside. The reason is elegant. We have survived them for two hundred thousand years, and our lineage for far longer, which tells us the background rate is low. The numbers bear it out — the odds of a civilization-ending natural event this century are, on his estimate, vanishingly small, perhaps one in a few thousand or less.
The danger has shifted almost entirely to threats of our own making. Nuclear war remains the original one: thousands of warheads still on hair-trigger alert, and a history of near-misses that reads like a series of coin flips that happened to land right. Then there is climate change and other environmental damage, which Ord takes seriously as a risk multiplier and a source of vast suffering, while judging that the extreme, everything-ending tail — runaway warming beyond anything we can model — is real but harder to pin down than the more familiar catastrophic scenarios.
03Chapter 3 — Why the future is worth the fuss
Underneath the risk assessment sits a moral argument, and Ord is a philosopher first. Why should the extinction of humanity count as uniquely bad — worse than a catastrophe that killed almost everyone but left a remnant to rebuild? His answer turns on what is lost. A catastrophe that ends the species does not merely kill the living; it erases everyone who could ever have lived, and every good thing they might have made, thought, or felt. The wrong is done to the future.
He asks us to take the scale of that future seriously. If humanity plays its cards well, we could persist for a very long time indeed — the Earth remains habitable for hundreds of millions of years, and the universe offers far longer horizons. Against that span, the couple of hundred thousand years we have managed so far is an infancy. To end the story now would be to snuff it out in its opening pages, forfeiting the overwhelming majority of everything of value that could exist.
04Chapter 4 — The safety of a species still in its adolescence
Step back from the individual dangers and Ord's larger picture comes into focus. He sees humanity as a species in a difficult adolescence: newly powerful, not yet wise, testing capabilities it does not fully understand. The teenager metaphor is deliberate. Adolescence is when you acquire adult powers before adult judgment, and the risks are highest in exactly that gap. The task is not to renounce the power but to grow into it — to survive long enough to become the kind of civilization that can handle what it has built.
What would that look like in practice? Ord's answer is unglamorous and concrete. It means treating existential risk as a recognized field rather than a fringe worry, funding it at something like the scale of the threat rather than the pennies currently spent. It means international coordination on the technologies that matter most, so that no single actor's recklessness can decide the outcome for everyone. And it means building institutions with the patience to think in centuries, when our politics rarely thinks past the next election.
05Conclusion
Fermi's men did their math and lit the fuse anyway, and the atmosphere held. That morning in the desert is where Ord locates the beginning of the Precipice — the point at which a species acquired the means to end its own story and then kept building more of them. His book is an attempt to reckon with that inheritance honestly: to name what could destroy us, to weigh each threat by the evidence rather than the drama, and to insist that the future has a stake in what we do now.
