Born in Blois in 1948, Pierre Rosanvallon is a French historian and sociologist whose work has made him one of the foremost intellectual authorities on democratic theory and political history. Appointed professor at the Collège de France in 2001, where he holds the chair in modern and contemporary political history, he has devoted his scholarship to the history of democracy, the evolution of the French state, and questions of social justice in contemporary societies.
