About the author

Ivan Illich (1926–2002) was an Austrian Catholic priest, theologian, philosopher, and social critic whose work mounted a sustained challenge to modern institutions. Born in Vienna and dying in Bremen, he is best known for two landmark critiques: Deschooling Society (1971), which argued that institutional education demotivates and alienates learners, and Medical Nemesis (1975), which introduced the concept of medical harm to the sociology of medicine, indicting overmedicalisation and the pathologisation of ordinary life. A restless, self-described "errant pilgrim," Illich remains a foundational voice in radical social thought.
