Born in Oldham in 1943, Sir Ian Kershaw is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost authorities on Nazi Germany. A historian whose work centers on the social history of twentieth-century Germany, he is best known for his landmark biography of Adolf Hitler. Kershaw spent much of his academic career at the University of Sheffield and has credited German historian Martin Broszat as an inspirational mentor who shaped his understanding of the Nazi period.

He has also served as historical adviser on major BBC documentaries, including The Nazis: A Warning from History and War of the Century.
