About the author

Carl Ransom Rogers (1902–1987) stands as one of the most consequential figures in modern psychology. Born in Oak Park and a co-founder of humanistic psychology, he transformed clinical practice through his person-centered approach, which placed the client's own experience at the heart of therapy. His influence extended well beyond the consulting room into education and organizational life.

The American Psychological Association honored him twice — for scientific contributions in 1956 and professional contributions in 1972 — and a 1982 survey of U.S. and Canadian psychologists ranked him the most influential psychotherapist in history.
