About the author

Born Nguyễn Xuân Bảo in Huế in 1926, Thích Nhất Hạnh became one of the most influential Buddhist voices of the twentieth century — widely known as the "father of mindfulness" and the principal architect of engaged Buddhism, a term he coined himself. A Vietnamese Thiền monk, poet, and prolific author, he co-founded the School of Youth for Social Services in the 1960s and created the Order of Interbeing. Exiled from Vietnam in 1966 for opposing the war, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King, Jr.

He founded Plum Village Monastery in France in 1982 and returned to Vietnam in 2018, dying at Từ Hiếu Temple in 2022, aged 95.
