Terence 'Terry' Osborn Ranger (1929–2015) was a prominent British Africanist and one of the foremost historians of Zimbabwe, whose career spanned the country's pre- and post-Independence periods from the 1960s onward. A leading figure in post-colonial historiography, he published and edited dozens of books and hundreds of articles, most notably co-editing The Invention of Tradition (1983) with Eric Hobsbawm. He held the Rhodes Professorship of Race Relations at the University of Oxford and was the first Africanist fellow of the British Academy.
