Robert Macfarlane, born in 1976 in Halam, is a British writer and Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, whose work has made him one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary nature writing. His books — among them The Old Ways (2012), Landmarks (2015), The Lost Words (2017), and Underland (2019) — explore landscape, place, language, and the human relationship with the natural world. He received the E.

M. Forster Award for Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2017, and was named an outside contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature in both 2022 and 2024.
