Robert Greene

About the author

Robert Greene (1558–1592) was a prolific Elizabethan dramatist and pamphleteer who has a claim to being the first professional author in England. Born in Norwich, he studied at Cambridge, earning a BA in 1580 and an MA in 1583, before settling in London and writing prolifically across romances, plays, and autobiography. His best-known play is Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay.

He is also remembered for the posthumous pamphlet Greene's Groats-Worth of Witte, widely believed to contain an early attack on William Shakespeare.
