Peter Singer, born in Melbourne in 1946, is one of the most influential moral philosophers of his era — a thinker whose secular, utilitarian arguments have reshaped public debate on animal rights and global poverty. Emeritus Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University, he is best known for Animal Liberation (1975) and the essay "Famine, Affluence, and Morality.

" He founded Monash University's Centre for Human Bioethics, co-founded Animals Australia, and established the nonprofit The Life You Can Save. The Sydney Morning Herald named him one of Australia's ten most influential public intellectuals.
