Marshall McLuhan
About the author
Often called "the father of media studies," Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan remains one of the most visionary thinkers of the twentieth century. Born in Edmonton in 1911 and raised in Winnipeg, he studied at the University of Manitoba and Cambridge before settling at the University of Toronto in 1946. He coined "the medium is the message" and the term *global village*, and predicted the World Wide Web nearly three decades before its invention.
A dominant voice in late-1960s media discourse, his reputation faded, then surged again with the rise of the internet.
