Lynn White

About the author

Lynn Townsend White Jr. was an American historian of technology who held teaching positions at Princeton University (1933–1937), Stanford University (1937–1943), and the University of California, Los Angeles (1958–1987), and served as president of Mills College, Oakland, California (1943–1958). He is best known for the book Medieval Technology and Social Change (1962) and articles exploring the relationship between religion, technology, and ecology.

White helped found the Society for the History of Technology and served as its president from 1960 to 1962; he received the Pfizer Award for Medieval Technology and Social Change in 1963 and the Leonardo da Vinci Medal in 1964.
