About the author

Luc Ferry, born in 1951, is a French philosopher and former Minister of National Education. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, he holds an agrégation in philosophy and a doctorate in political science. Ferry established himself as a prominent public intellectual through his work on humanism, environmental ethics, and the democratization of philosophical discourse. His academic career includes professorships at the Sorbonne and the École Polytechnique.

Among his major publications prior to "A Brief History of Thought" are "The New Ecological Order" (1992), "Man Made God" (1996), and "What Is the Good Life?" (2002). Ferry's philosophical project consistently aims to make complex philosophical ideas accessible to broader audiences while defending humanistic values against various forms of anti-humanism.

Ferry's thesis in this work represents his understanding that philosophy represents humanity's ongoing quest to overcome fear of death and achieve wisdom through successive paradigmatic shifts from ancient cosmology to modern humanism and contemporary deconstruction.
