Joan Riviere

About the author

Born in Brighton in 1883, Joan Riviere occupies a distinctive place in the history of psychoanalysis as both a pioneering English translator of Sigmund Freud and an influential theorist in her own right. Working at the intersection of translation and original scholarship, she helped shape how Freud's ideas reached the anglophone world. She was active in British psychoanalytic circles until her death in London in 1962, leaving a legacy that spans both the dissemination and the development of psychoanalytic thought.
