Jiddu Krishnamurti

About the author

Born in Madanapalle, India, in 1895, Jiddu Krishnamurti was adopted by the Theosophical Society and groomed from childhood to become a prophesied World Teacher. He broke decisively from that role in 1929, disbanding the Order of the Star built around him and spending the rest of his life challenging every form of spiritual authority — including his own. Insisting that "truth is a pathless land," he advocated choiceless awareness over doctrine or guru-worship.

Aldous Huxley's endorsement brought him wider recognition in the 1950s, and works such as The First and Last Freedom remain influential. He died in Ojai in 1986.
