About the author
Jeff Hawkins is an American neuroscientist, computer engineer, and entrepreneur whose career spans both theoretical neuroscience and practical technology innovation. He founded Palm Computing and Handspring, pioneering the development of handheld computers and smartphones. Following his commercial success, Hawkins transitioned to neuroscience research, founding the Redwood Neuroscience Institute and later Numenta, a company focused on machine intelligence based on neocortical principles.
His previous influential work includes "On Intelligence" (2004), which challenged conventional artificial intelligence approaches by proposing that prediction, rather than behavior, constitutes the essence of intelligence. Hawkins holds patents in computer architecture and has been recognized for bridging computational theory with biological understanding of brain function.
