About the author

Born in Paris in 1950, Jean-Claude Michéa is a French philosopher whose work centers on a searching critique of contemporary left-wing politics and its drift away from anti-capitalist struggle. A libertarian socialist, he is best known for his essays on George Orwell, whose moral socialism he champions as a corrective to what Michéa calls the left's surrender to a "religion of progress." He argues that liberal bourgeois values have absorbed and hollowed out socialism, leaving behind an individualistic order justified solely by law and economics, estranged from the proletarian and popular world.
