Jean Andreau
About the author
Born in Marseille in 1939, Jean Andreau is a French historian whose work has made him a leading authority on the economy and society of the ancient Roman world, with a particular focus on the period stretching from the third century BC to the third century AD. A former student of the École normale supérieure (1960) and onetime member of the École française de Rome, he studied under Pierre Grimal, Julien Guey, and Claude Nicolet. His research engages broader questions about ancient and pre-industrial historical economies.
As of 2016, he serves as research director at the EHESS.
