Howard Zinn (1922–2010) was an American historian, World War II veteran, and one of the most widely read radical voices in U.S. historiography.
He chaired the history and social sciences department at Spelman College and taught political science at Boston University. His landmark 1980 work, A People's History of the United States, became a bestseller that reshaped how generations approached American history from the bottom up. Zinn wrote more than twenty books, covering the civil rights, anti-war, and labor movements, and described himself as "something of a democratic socialist.
