Henry William Brands Jr., born in Portland in 1953, is an American historian who holds the Jack S. Blanton Sr.

Chair in History at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his PhD in 1985. A prolific chronicler of the American past, he has authored more than thirty books on U.S.

history, with two of his works earning recognition as Pulitzer Prize finalists.
