About the author

Friedrich August von Hayek (1899–1992) was an Austrian economist and philosopher whose ideas on price signals, spontaneous order, and the limits of central planning made him one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century. A leading figure of the Austrian school of economics, he shared the 1974 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Gunnar Myrdal. His most enduring work, The Road to Serfdom (1944), remains widely read decades after publication.

He taught at the London School of Economics and the University of Chicago, held dual Austrian-British nationality, and preferred the label classical liberal over conservative.
