Dick Hebdige

Dick Hebdige, born in 1951, is an English media theorist and sociologist best known for his landmark 1979 work Subculture: The Meaning of Style, which established him as a leading voice in the study of subcultures and their resistance to mainstream society. A professor emeritus of art and media studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara — where he taught from 2004 to 2021 — he has written widely on reggae, postmodernism, surrealism, design, and contemporary art. His two other books are Cut'n'mix (1987) and Hiding in the Light (1988), alongside more than 57 essays published between 1974 and 2016.
