Carl Emil Schorske

Carl Emil Schorske (1915–2015) was an American cultural historian and Princeton University professor whose landmark work, Fin-de-Siècle Vienna: Politics and Culture (1980), reshaped the study of modern European intellectual history. The book earned him the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1981, the same year he became one of the inaugural recipients of the MacArthur Fellows Program award. A century-long life bookended by the Bronx and East Windsor Township, it concluded with a fitting honor: Vienna named him an honorary citizen in 2012.
