Bronisław Malinowski

About the author

Bronisław Malinowski (1884–1942) stands as one of the most consequential figures in modern anthropology, whose fieldwork and theoretical writings fundamentally shaped how the discipline understands culture and society. Born in Kraków, he earned his doctorate at the Jagiellonian University before moving to the London School of Economics, where he would later hold a chair in anthropology and draw generations of students. His years of immersive research in the Trobriand Islands and Melanesia produced his landmark 1922 work, Argonauts of the Western Pacific.

When World War II broke out, he remained in the United States and joined Yale University, where he died in 1942.
