Arno J. Mayer (1926–2023) was a Luxembourgish-born American historian whose work centered on modern Europe, diplomatic history, and the Holocaust. He held the Dayton-Stockton Professorship of History at Princeton University, where he built a distinguished career as one of the field's notable voices on European political upheaval and mass violence.
Born in Luxembourg and later based in Princeton, he brought a sharp analytical lens to some of the twentieth century's most consequential and troubling episodes.
