Arlette Jouanna

Arlette Jouanna (1936–2022) was a French historian and professor emerita at the Université Paul-Valéry (Montpellier III), where she was also a member of the Centre de recherches interdisciplinaires en sciences humaines et sociales (CRISES). A specialist in the political and social history of sixteenth-century France, she devoted her scholarly career to two interlocking subjects: the history of the French nobility and the French Wars of Religion. Her work brought rigorous academic depth to one of the most turbulent periods in French history.
