Born in Santiniketan in 1933, Amartya Sen is an Indian economist and philosopher whose work reshaped how the world thinks about poverty, justice, and human well-being. A Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences (1998), he has made landmark contributions to welfare economics, social choice theory, famine analysis, and development economics. Currently Thomas W.
Lamont University Professor at Harvard, he previously served as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. India honored him with the Bharat Ratna in 1999, and in 2020 the German Book Trade awarded him its Peace Prize for his scholarship on global justice.
