Zygmunt Bauman

About the author

Zygmunt Bauman (1925–2017) was a Polish-British sociologist and philosopher whose life was shaped as much by political upheaval as by intellectual ambition. Expelled from Poland during the 1968 political crisis and stripped of his citizenship, he emigrated first to Israel, then settled in England in 1971. He studied at the London School of Economics and became Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds.

One of the most wide-ranging social theorists of his era, he wrote on modernity and the Holocaust, postmodern consumerism, and his influential concept of "liquid modernity.
