Stuart Hall

About the author

Stuart Hall (1932–2014) was a Jamaican-British Marxist sociologist, cultural theorist, and political activist whose influence on intellectual life earned him recognition as one of the most consequential thinkers of the past sixty years. Alongside Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams, he was a founding figure of British Cultural Studies. A co-founder of the New Left Review in the 1950s, he later directed the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at Birmingham, where he broadened the field to encompass race and gender and introduced French theoretical currents.

He subsequently held a professorship at the Open University until his retirement in 1997.
