Born in Paris in 1949, Philippe Descola is a French anthropologist whose reputation rests on two pillars: his fieldwork among the Achuar, one of the Jivaroan peoples, and his broader contributions to anthropological theory. Elected a Fellow of the British Academy, he has become one of the most influential figures in contemporary anthropology, pushing the discipline to rethink fundamental assumptions about the relationship between nature and culture through both ethnographic and theoretical work.
