About the author

Ned Blackhawk, an enrolled member of the Te-Moak tribe of the Western Shoshone, is a historian at Yale University whose work has reshaped how American history is understood through Native perspectives. His first major book, Violence Over the Land: Indians and Empire in the Early American West (2006), earned both the Frederick Jackson Turner Award and the Robert M. Utley Prize in 2007.

His follow-up, The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History (2023), won the National Book Award for Nonfiction and the Mark Lynton History Prize.
