About the author

Born in Algiers in 1940, Jacques Rancière is a French philosopher and Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris VIII: Vincennes–Saint-Denis, as well as a professor at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee. He began his career as a collaborator of Louis Althusser, co-authoring the landmark structuralist Marxist text Reading Capital in 1965. The 1968 political uprisings proved a turning point, pushing him to break decisively with Althusserian Marxism and develop an original body of work centered on aesthetics and political philosophy.
