Edward Gibbon was a British essayist, historian, and minor politician whose most important work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, was published in six volumes between 1776 and 1789. The work achieved critical and commercial success and became known for its elegant and ironic prose, rigorous use of primary sources, and polemical criticism of organised religion.
