Born in Kolkata in 1948, Dipesh Chakrabarty is one of the most influential voices in postcolonial theory and subaltern studies. Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor in history at the University of Chicago, he received the 2014 Toynbee Prize for significant academic and public contributions to humanity.
His landmark book Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference (2000) reshaped how historians engage with Eurocentrism, while his 2009 essay "The Climate of History: Four Theses" extended his reach into the urgent debate on humanity's geological agency.
