About the author
Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, born in Béziers in 1949, is a French philosopher and historian of science, professor emeritus at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She argues that the history of science is essential for grasping research as a culturally embedded, multidimensional endeavor. Her work focuses especially on the histories of chemistry and materials science.
Her 1993 collaboration with Isabelle Stengers, Histoire de la chimie — translated as A History of Chemistry in 1996 — earned the Prix Jean-Rostand. In 1997 she received the Dexter Award for her contributions to the history of science.
