Arthur Coleman Danto (1924–2013) was an American philosopher and art critic whose influence stretched across philosophical aesthetics, philosophy of history, and philosophy of action. A professor at Columbia University, he served for many years as art critic for The Nation, bringing rigorous philosophical thinking to bear on contemporary art. His intellectual range was wide: he wrote on theories of representation, philosophical psychology, Hegel's aesthetics, and the thought of Nietzsche and Sartre, making him one of the most versatile and widely read American philosophers of his generation.
