André Gorz
About the author
Born Gerhart Hirsch in Vienna in 1923, André Gorz — also known by his pen name Michel Bosquet — was an Austrian-French social philosopher, journalist, and trenchant critic of work. A co-founder of Le Nouvel Observateur in 1964, he initially embraced Sartrean existentialist Marxism before the May 1968 student upheavals drew him toward political ecology. A leading theorist of the New Left in the 1960s and 1970s, he coined the concept of non-reformist reform and devoted his work to wage labour, social alienation, liberation from work, and guaranteed basic income.
He died in Vosnon in 2007.
