Once a business has secured a large customer base, it has various paths to monetization at its disposal, including direct sales, offering additional services, or using the customer base for other profitable ventures.

Amazon.com exemplifies this shift with what's known as the Magnet Effect. Starting as an online bookstore with a wide selection of titles, Amazon quickly attracted a large customer base (which had grown to 13 million by the end of 1999). This customer base served as a foundation for Amazon to broaden its product range, with the goal of becoming the ultimate online shopping destination. Given that a significant number of online shoppers have bought from Amazon.com, this goal seems increasingly attainable.

The Magnet Effect signifies a profound change from traditional business strategies, akin to putting the cart before the horse. It challenges the old wisdom by suggesting that it's possible to gather a customer base before fully knowing how to profit from them. Furthermore, it implies that businesses can operate at a loss while building their customer base, with the expectation of future profits. This strategy underlies some of the most innovative and, at times, controversial business models in the e-commerce world, including those of Amazon.com and Yahoo!.

Spiral Marketing represents a revolutionary approach in the realm of marketing. This is where the Domino Method comes into play, suggesting that while it's relatively straightforward to predict future events, pinpointing the exact timing is much more challenging. Technology trends, much like a series of dominoes toppling over one after the other, follow a predictable trajectory. The real challenge lies in determining when the initial domino will topple. By identifying which technology trends are on the brink of explosion, businesses can secure a competitive advantage.

Many attempt to navigate technology markets using a mix of intuition and speculation. However, the Domino Method offers a structured approach to spotting imminent shifts and changes, thereby uncovering valuable market opportunities. This method is built on three fundamental principles.

Firstly, technology markets require a considerable amount of time to develop. It often takes more than two decades for new technologies to transition from invention to widespread consumer adoption. This journey is typically marked by numerous setbacks and false starts. Furthermore, once a market emerges, scaling production to meet demand is a slow process. The path to market dominance is rarely linear, with various experts providing conflicting predictions about market growth and adoption rates.
