Mastering the elevator pitch advantage

Listen to the podcast excerpt:
0:00 --:--

Description

An elevator speech is a concise pitch, lasting no more than three minutes, designed to spark interest in your idea, product, or service. It's a metaphor for a brief, unexpected opportunity to impress someone important with your message.

Over two decades, I've seen the power of well-crafted elevator speeches in gaining attention and achieving goals, from securing major accounts to landing dream jobs. Through specialized workshops, individuals learn to create persuasive messages that are clear, engaging, and effective, setting the stage for success and making the journey more enjoyable.

Preparation guide

The primary aim of an elevator pitch is not to finalize a transaction or secure a sale immediately. Instead, employing a metaphor from the realm of football, the objective is to progress the play forward. The intent is to ignite a spark of interest in the listener, thereby paving the way for more detailed discussions in the future.

Generally speaking, speeches can be categorized into three distinct types: informative presentations, which deliver impartial facts to foster further investigation and learning by the individual; ceremonial presentations, which reflect the values held by a collective of people and dictate the proceedings; and persuasive presentations, aimed at conveying information to prompt the listener towards a specific action. Elevator speeches merge elements of both persuasive and informative styles.

When delivering an elevator speech, the goal is to persuade the listener to take a step that will eventually lead to a sale of your offering. However, the elevator speech is not intended to conclude the sale but rather to secure a position where you can be heard further.

Bearing this in mind, it becomes evident that a successful elevator speech should not be an overwhelming flood of information. Given that you have a tight window of three minutes or less, it is crucial to be concise. Similarly, an elevator speech should not be mistaken for a comprehensive sales pitch, which would demand significantly more time from your listener.

Elevator speeches are best conducted in an informal setting rather than a formal one, with a conversational tone often yielding the best results in such scenarios. The ultimate goal of an elevator speech is not to achieve an immediate victory but to make incremental progress and secure the opportunity to elaborate further at a later date. In doing so, you aim to stand out in a memorable and sophisticated manner amidst the constant barrage of information that people face daily.

Performance metrics

Striving to become a "great" speaker is a pursuit mired in subjectivity, as the definition of "greatness" varies widely from one individual to another.

Rather than chasing an ambiguous standard of greatness, it is more advantageous to focus on crafting an elevator speech that is memorable, impactful, and effective. Achieving these three benchmarks is the cornerstone of successful communication.

Terri Sjodin posits that speakers who are truly memorable, impactful, persuasive, and effective manage to construct a compelling and engaging argument, enriched with thought-provoking, creative, and intriguing content and narratives that vividly animate their message. They communicate in a manner that is authentic to themselves, which in turn, renders their speech more credible and believable.

There are six universal arguments that are effective in the majority of elevator speeches. These include:

1. Saving time, as everyone is looking to maximize their efficiency. 2. Saving money, which naturally garners attention due to its potential to enhance profitability. 3. Reducing stress by removing a source of worry. 4. Providing security and assurance that partnering or investing is a sound decision. 5. Adding enjoyment to business interactions, which everyone prefers over mundane transactions. 6. Ensuring ease of use, as people favor simplicity over complexity, even with advanced technology.

To build a compelling business case, begin by pinpointing which of these six benefits your product, service, or idea truly offers. This directly addresses the listener's implicit query: "What's in it for me?" Recognizing what the listener gains, you'll find that their perspective encompasses three dimensions:

1. Personal gain: How does your offering benefit the individual? 2. Professional gain: How does your offering benefit the listener's career or business? 3. Emotional gain: How does your offering fulfill the listener's emotional needs or desires?

To construct your talking points, aim to address each of these dimensions as thoroughly as possible. Consider highlighting your extensive experience in your field, your exceptional educational background or specialized training, your tenacity and meticulousness, your impressive success record, or your leadership status within your industry. You might also emphasize your company's longevity in the market, your prime location or local services, your cutting-edge technology or unique systems, your proven dedication to excellence, or your outstanding commitment to environmental stewardship.

Securing privileges

Once you have meticulously crafted your elevator speech, the subsequent step involves actively seeking opportunities to present it. The impact of sharing your elevator speech with just one individual in an appropriate setting can initiate a series of events that is truly remarkable. To witness this effect, however, you must be the one to set things in motion. This concept is encapsulated in a West African saying that advises, "When you pray, move your feet."

The primary task in effectively utilizing your elevator speech begins with identifying the individuals to whom you aspire to deliver it. Compile a list of these individuals and then dedicate your efforts to establishing a connection with someone who can facilitate a referral to any person on that list. It is essential to find a method to gain entry.

Furthermore, it is crucial to determine who can assist you by providing a referral or an introduction to the individuals you are eager to communicate with. Prepare a concise script that you can use to persuade these individuals to make the introduction on your behalf. With persistence, you will discover a pathway to success. Abraham Lincoln once said, "I am a success today because I had a friend who believed in me, and I didn't have the heart to let him down."

Mark Twain also offered wisdom by stating, "Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So, cast off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

As you strive to earn the privilege of being heard by someone influential, it is imperative to conduct thorough and passionate research. This preparation will enable you to tailor your elevator speech, allowing you to address their specific interests and concerns directly. For instance, the owner of an advertising agency seeking to attract the attention of a key decision-maker for a large regional car dealership employed a creative strategy. He sent various car parts to the decision-maker every half-hour over a twelve-hour period, with each part accompanied by a unique and memorable message, ultimately securing an appointment.
